As summer temperatures rise, so does the risk, especially for those taking psychiatric prescription medications.
Research shows that medications such as antipsychotics, antidepressants, and mood stabilizers can interfere with the body’s ability to cool itself. Some reduce sweating, while others impair your sense of thirst, putting you at higher risk for dangerous overheating or even heatstroke (Abbott, 2023; Gaughran et al., 2022).
🧠 What’s Happening in the Body?
Psychiatric medications can affect the hypothalamus — the brain’s internal thermostat — making it harder to sense heat, regulate temperature, and stay hydrated, particularly during heatwaves (APA, 2023).
🚨 Medications of concern include:
Antipsychotics (e.g., olanzapine, haloperidol)
SSRIs and SNRIs (e.g., fluoxetine, duloxetine)
Lithium and tricyclic antidepressants
What You Can Do:
✅ Drink water consistently, don’t wait until you feel thirsty.
✅ Stay in cool, shaded environments whenever possible.
✅ Talk with your provider about safely managing your medications during periods of extreme heat.
✅ Check in with friends and loved ones who take these medications.
Mental health matters. So does heat safety. Let’s help each other stay well this summer. 💛

We’re proud to announce that The Mandy Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Behavioral Health (TMF) is now officially incorporated as a Domestic Nonprofit Organization in Arkansas, and we’ve received our EIN from the IRS!
We are now preparing to submit the remaining documents to apply for our 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.
Josh has also completed a rough draft of our newest initiative: The Mandy Foundation’s Community Suicide Prevention Program. He has reached out to the Arkansas Department of Health – Suicide Prevention Program to request guidance and support for accreditation.
In addition, he has contacted the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training for input on our Suicide Prevention Program for First Responders, which he is currently developing.
